This 6-night voyage brings you to the beautiful blend of cultures that lives in Singapore, the unique waterways and paddy fields of Vietnam, and finally an overnight in the vibrant city of Hong Kong.
Singapore
Among the one of the world’s busiest ports and prosperous cities, Singapore is full of culture, history and excitement, where you are welcome to enjoy a tropical climate and multicultural population.
At its colonial core is Padang, a cricket field since the 1830s now flanked by the 18 Corinthian columns of City Hall. In Chinatown stands the oddly named but beautiful Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.
The first settlement known as Singapore was formed in the late 13th century on the banks of the Singapore River. This served as the only port at the southern end of the Strait of Malacca, thriving in its infancy before its role as an international trading port declined by the 15th century. Singapore’s main settlement and port were later destroyed in the early 17th century, with no significant settlement or functionality present here until Sir Stamford Raffles landed on the island in 1819.
Raffles established a new settlement and international port for Britain, keen to draw in traders from Asia and Europe. The Chinese began to set up trading houses on the river’s south bank and lower reaches, while the British resided on the upper reaches of the river. Singapore thrived and continued to do so when it ceased to be part of the British Empire in 1963, despite small setbacks in trade up until the 1990s, when the port once again became a key player.
A remarkable combination of history, culture, modernized ideals and tropical climate contribute to Singapore’s diverse and prosperous character. Business is booming, with the towering skyscrapers and big brands residing in the Central Business District proving a powerful nod to this. This is the area most visitors should start exploring during their Port of Singapore cruise given that the river forms the central artery of Singapore.
Beyond are several intriguing attractions centered round where Raffles founded his colony. Do not miss Cavenagh Bridge, the city’s oldest bridge, constructed in 1869. Take a look at the grand Fullerton Hotel, once the General Post Office building. Along the front of the river are a number of traditional shop houses in which today restaurants and bars are located. You cannot leave Singapore without tasting its famous chili crab or sipping on a Singapore sling, and this is the best area to do so.
Marina Bay continues the theme of flamboyance and fortune, crowned by the incredible architecture of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. From here you will enjoy the best view of the Central Business District, further enhanced by a nightly fountain and light show along the river itself. Do not miss the Gardens by the Bay behind the hotel, especially if you want some serenity amid the busy city.
Chinatown and Little India bring another example of Singapore’s diversity to the table, home to wonderful authentic eateries and some stunning temples. In Chinatown, the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is the star of the show. While in Little India, a visit to the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple will allow you to discover the district’s oldest and busiest temple.
Hue and Da Nang
A stretch of coastline quite unlike any other in the South China Sea. Passing coastal sand dunes, beautiful green hills and paddy fields, you sail to the historic Vietnamese cities of Hue and Da Nang.
Your guide to Hue and Da Nang
A port call to Chan May offers the chance to experience white sand beaches, historic tombs and one of Vietnam’s most famous waterways: the Perfume River. Whether you choose to travel to Hue or Da Nang you’ll be met with a wealth of sights to see, not to mention scenes of indescribable beauty. Both cities are the gateways to some of Vietnam’s most illustrious treasures; from the Ancient Emperor tombs outside of Hue to the spectacular cave labyrinth of Da Nang’s Marble Mountains. Prepare to find your senses piqued, your soul nourished and your heart captivated by otherworldly sights and spellbinding scenery.
Exploring
An excursion to the historic city of Hue or the beaches of Da Nang is an ideal way to enjoy your port call in Chan May. While the latter offers luminous white sands on its Lang Co and My Khe beach resorts (not unlike those of the Caribbean) Hue is steeped in history offering a deep dive into Vietnam’s imperial past. Of course, time spent in Da Nang also opens up the opportunity to visit Marble Mountain – a series of caves named after the five elements – a must-see pilgrimage site. While Hue’s riverfront promenade, Thien Mu Pagoda and tombs of Ancient Emperors are among the cultural delights awaiting travelers in this centuries’ old city.
Eating and drinking
Vietnamese cuisine is fresh, fragrant and one of the healthiest in the world. It can also be spicy and herbaceous, with mint and raw chili often used to garnish dishes. One thing’s for sure; if you like your food packed full of flavor, you’ll be in your element in Vietnam. Noodle based dishes are extremely popular. You’ll find these in a variety of guises; from aromatic broths (Pho, pronounced ‘fa’) to summer rolls (similar to a spring roll, served chilled and unfried). Another Vietnamese staple (especially around lunchtimes) is Banh Mi. This soft sub roll comes generously stuffed with a slick of pate, some thinly sliced pork and a combination of julienne and pickled vegetables – delightful.
Shopping
In Da Nang city center you’ll find a blend of lively markets and shopping centers selling everything from fashion and cosmetics to fresh and dried foods. If visiting the Marble Mountains make sure to allow time to stop off in Non Nuoc Fine Arts Village. Set at the mountains’ base, this 300-year old village offers an array of artisanal wares coveted by tourists and locals alike. Street markets abound in Hue and offer the best place to source an original keepsake to remind you of your travels – for a snip of a price no less. Just wandering Hue’s streets it’s impossible not to encounter countless vendors selling art, silk scarves, bamboo bowls and a variety of other native Vietnamese goods.
Beyond Hue and Da Nang
Traveling a little farther than Da Nang brings you to the historic and much-loved town of Hoi An. Always a favorite with travelers, this ancient town is steeped in character and has a wealth of tailoring shops able to turn around custom shirts within hours. Once a trading post (but not any longer) Hoi An also enjoys a wider range of culinary influences than you find elsewhere in Vietnam, and taking a food tour here is a great way to pass the time. The town is also extremely pedestrian-friendly with cars and motorbikes banned in its Old Town. Rent a bicycle and cycle through the verdant countryside to Cua Dai beach, or simply drink in the magic of this enchanting riverside locale.
Hong Kong
Contradiction is part of Hong Kong’s attraction. While the city buzzes with modern commerce, soaring skyscrapers and sophistication, it remains a place of ancient beliefs and intriguing local customs.
Your guide to Hong Kong
Few cities balance old and new like Hong Kong. A city as fiercely modern as it is traditional, life here pulses with vigor and vitality while still honoring ancient customs and beliefs. Market traders hawk steaming dumplings on neon-lit streets. Sacred temples stand in the shadow of skyscrapers and luxury boutiques populate glossy shopping centers. Contradiction is all part of Hong Kong’s appeal, the city’s dynamic personality a complementary blend of Chinese and British influences. Heralded as one of the world’s foremost culinary, cultural and commercial capitals, a port call here provides myriad ways to satisfy your stomach, your senses and your suitcase.
Exploring
Hong Kong buzzes with grand galleries, thriving art complexes and auspicious temples. Retreat among the city’s parks, or travel back to the time of tea houses and Cantonese opera. Hong Kong's rich history and contemporary flair shine through in Tai Kwun Center, a fascinating and forward-thinking arts complex. Kowloon Park, with its two-tiered lotus pond and basking terrapins, provides the perfect refuge from city life while climbing Victoria Peak reveals spectacular city views.
Finally, pay a visit to the incense-infused Man Mo Temple. This sacred tribute to the Gods of War and Literature has welcomed worshippers in Hong Kong since the 19
Eating and drinking
A true culinary capital, Hong Kong is home to over sixty Michelin-starred restaurants, countless traditional eateries and an abundance of street food vendors. The city’s ever-growing coffee scene also has plenty to offer, including top-of-the-line java and accomplished latte art. Stop in for dim sum at one of many contemporary restaurants or seek out traditional Sichuan dishes that evoke the romance of old Beijing. Whether you’re sipping cocktails from a rooftop bar in Kowloon or browsing the countless smoldering food stalls at Temple Street’s atmospheric Night Market, Hong Kong is an explosion of fragrance, color and flavor.
Shopping
Shopping in Hong Kong is a thrilling experience. The city is home to countless specialty markets as well as world-class retail centers. Of the former, the Ladies' Market is one of the most popular in the city, bustling with clothing and footwear stalls. Jade Market (as you might anticipate) specializes in jade jewelry, while Stanley Market is renowned for its Chinese handicrafts. Times Square Mall (inspired by its New York namesake) and Pacific Place are both gargantuan shopping plazas, while Landmark is considered Hong Kong’s Holy Grail of designer shopping, boasting an affluent blend of high-end labels and Michelin-starred restaurants.
Beyond Hong Kong
Venture beyond Hong Kong to the stunning metropolis of Macau, the small fishing village of Tai O or Tian Tan Buddha. Like its U.S counterpart, Macau is a casino capital with bright lights and glitzy hotels that echo the Las Vegas strip. The city is a world away from Tai O on Lantau Island, where fishermen live a humble existence in stilt houses straddling the water. While on Lantau, be sure to see Tian Tan Buddha (commonly known as Big Buddha). A glass-bottomed cable car will transport you to the summit, and the views on the way up are worth the trip alone.

Lido Deck
If you’re looking for a blend of relaxation and recreation, the Lido Deck is a real oasis. Spend time sunbathing on loungers by the pool, taking a dip to escape the heat of the sun whenever you need to. Perhaps get lost in your vacation read, perfectly paired with a cocktail when the mood strikes. The Lido Deck is also home to a bar and grill, so refreshments are never far away.
Games Deck
On deck 11 you’ll find a host of fun activities to try your hand at. Among your choices are bowls, croquet, and deck tennis. You could also practice your swing in the golf nets or feel like part of the action in giant chess! Come along just for fun and to test your skills, or perhaps join a tournament if you’re feeling confident. The Games Deck is a great place to come if you’d like to meet some like-minded new friends.
Grills Terrace
Spanning across decks 11 and 12, the Grills Terrace is a peaceful sanctuary reserved for Princess and Queens Grill guests. Access the space with your suite key and find yourself in a pretty, Mediterranean-style patio complete with ornate, characterful tables and chairs. Or you could wander up to the next level and choose a cushiony lounger to call yours for a few hours. A team of helpful wait staff are on hand to serve nibbles and refreshments here.
Pavilion pool
Located on deck 9, the Pavilion pool is the largest of the two outdoor pools on board. Here you can challenge yourself with multiple lengths, or perhaps just jump in to have fun and cool down. Surrounding the pool, you’ll find plenty of sun loungers and other seating options where you can relax, read a book, chat with new friends, and perhaps sip on something sparkling to celebrate your vacation.
Why do I need a passport/visa?
A passport is required for all of our voyage itineraries. This is a requirement of the countries that you will visit on your holiday. You will not be able to embark the ship without a passport.
Some countries will also require you to hold a visa to enter their country. Some countries will require you to obtain a visa in advance of your cruise and others may issue a visa upon arrival.
Traveling to the United States of America.
The requirements changed on April 1, 2016, therefore you cannot enter the U.S. without an electronic passport. If your passport was issued after October 2006, it should have an electronic chip. Even if your ESTA was previously valid, it will now be invalid from the April 1 following this change if you do not hold an electronic passport.
Can I pre board my luggage?
With Cunard's White Star Luggage Service™ provided by Luggage Forward®, your bags can be collected from your home and delivered to the ship, and then back home again once you disembark.
Where do coach transfers pick up from?
In addition to the motorcoach group transfer Cunard also offers a private car transfer as well as a private minivan transfer. Please see below for details:
Private Car - Generally a sedan. Can hold 2 persons and 2 pieces of luggage
Minivan - Can hold up to 4 people and 4 pieces of luggage.
When selecting the private transfer please make sure to advise the guest of the number of pieces of luggage. Also please select the correct transfer for their pick up or destination point.
Guests booking their own flights must inform Cunard with their flight details at least 35 days prior to departure in order for Cunard to make appropriate transfer arrangements. Guests should also ensure that Cunard is informed of any flight schedule changes so that the transfer is provided at the correct time. If Cunard does not have these details, transfers cannot be guaranteed. No refund or compensation will be issued in these cases.
Is there a fee for using a credit card?
No, Cunard does not charge a fee for using a credit card. However, your credit card company may charge an exchange rate fee or processing fee. So it is always best to check with your credit card company for any additional charges.
Will I need travel insurance?
We highly recommend all guests purchase travel insurance, including cover for Covid-19, this is arranged at the time of booking your vacation.
We strongly recommend guests obtain appropriate international travel, including cover for Covid-19- insurance at the time of booking your vacation, which may cover costs associated with changes to travel arrangements.
What happens to my luggage at the end of the cruise?
On Board.
On your final night on board you will be asked to pack your luggage and leave it outside your stateroom.
We recommend that you do not pack valuables, fragile items, and medication. Your luggage will be taken from outside your stateroom and will be waiting for you to identify and reclaim in the cruise terminal.
For fly cruises, your luggage will be transferred to the airport (if you have flights booked with us).
In the Cruise Terminal. Arriving into Southampton.
Your luggage will then be transferred ashore and will be placed in deck order making it easy to locate. There will be porters available to assist you and there will also be trolleys for you to use.
When traveling on a back-to-back voyage.
We would ask you to place all small loose items in your suitcase/bags and leave your clothing hanging on the hangers. Our Assistant Housekeeper would then transfer all your belongings/clothing to your new stateroom.
What facilities will be available when I embark the ship?
A number of facilities will be available to you when you embark the ship, for example, some restaurants, cafes, pools, the library, and some 160 bars will be open.
Because of legal and tax reasons, the casino, shops and spa will remain closed until we are 12 miles from British waters.
What am I not allowed to take on board?
The safety and security of our ships is paramount and, as such, you are prohibited from carrying certain items onto our vessels. Security screening of you and your baggage will be conducted each time you board the ship and if you are found in possession of any of these items they may be permanently confiscated. This list is not exhaustive and any other items may be refused at the discretion of either the Port or Ship security staff.
Prohibited items
The following items (this is not an exhaustive list) will not be permitted on board:
Can I travel when I am pregnant?
Yes, providing you do not enter your 24th week (or more) by the final date of your cruise.
Do I need a passport and how long should it be valid for?
Cunard recommends that all guests carry a passport. Travel Document requirements vary by destination and your citizenship. Please ensure you check the entry requirements of the countries you are traveling to.
International voyages
For international voyages (cruises that visit a foreign port outside your country of residence), passports are required for all guests and must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion date of your travel.
All passports should have sufficient blank pages for entry and exit stamps (applicable to the length and ports of call in your itinerary). Children are required to have their own passports. It is important that the names and initials on the passport exactly match those on your tickets.
For visa requirements you should check with your Travel Advisor or the relevant government website, to ensure you have the correct documentation.
EU/Schengen area
Cunard guests can only board and travel to EU or Schengen area countries* if their passport was issued less than 10 years from date of embarkation.
The passport must have at least three months left before the date of expiry when you disembark (regardless of whether or not the passport has an extension period).
*EU countries include: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. Additional countries in the Schengen area include: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
Domestic voyages
Sailings that begin and end at a USA port (either the same port or a different one) may not require a passport. If you cruise visits countries/areas listed below, you will not require a passport to sail. However if your cruise includes any port calls outside of this list, you will require a passport to sail. We highly recommend that, even if your cruise does not require it, you bring your passport with you.
For more information on the above and other accepted forms of ID/proof of citizenship for re-entering the United States, please visit the US Department of State Travel website.
Please note, it is your sole responsibility to obtain and have available the proper travel documents that are necessary for your travel, including all costs related to arrangements to obtain entry to countries you visit and re-entry to your destination country.
After days spent exactly as you please - be it with long lazy mornings, activity-filled afternoons, or beautiful, elegant evenings - the last day of your vacation can often be a bittersweet one. But, as the end of your Cunard voyage looms, you can enjoy every second to the last thanks to a simple disembarkation process. Avoid worry over the unfamiliar process of disembarkation with this useful guide, so your final day is just as smooth and easy as every day before it.
What is disembarkation day?
Disembarkation day is the day your cruise ends and you step off the ship, to journey home or perhaps on to another adventure. Disembarkation tends to happen in the morning, just after breakfast, and is over by lunchtime, so the ship’s crew can ready everything for new guests to board in the afternoon.
Why is disembarkation day important?
The last thing you want after a glorious voyage with Cunard is a stressful time leaving your ship. Let this final day be a peaceful drift back into ‘normal’ life – unless of course, you are traveling onwards to a new destination to extend your vacation – leaving the wonderful destinations and on board experience as fond, lasting memories of your voyage.
What to expect on disembarkation day
The day begins like most others – you will have time to enjoy a Cunard breakfast of the usual high standard before setting off to your departure meeting point (read further on in this guide to get a detailed view of the typical events of disembarkation). My Voyage, our on board digital planner, won’t contain any events, activities, or entertainment on your disembarkation day, nor will there be any Shore Experiences bookable.
Departures begin at around 7.30am and end at around 10am local time, though this will vary, and you will be given a specific time depending on your stateroom grade and location (much like how embarkation times are allocated).
Top tips for a smooth disembarkation
We have three top tips for an easy disembarkation process.
Prepare
Dedicate time to packing the night before, ensure your documents are all ready, and check your disembarkation time and location.
Stick to your time
To keep everyone safe during the disembarkation process, every guest is assigned a specific time and location to disembark from. This also reduces crowds and queue times on the gangways, in the luggage hall, and at the taxi rank outside the terminal. To minimise your time spent waiting, please keep to the time assigned to you.
Expect some waiting
Despite staggering disembarkation times, there will still be some waiting at your location, and there will likely be some queues in the terminal as everyone makes their way down the gangway. Please be patient and allow plenty of space for other guests, especially those with impaired mobility.

Preparing for disembarkation day
Settling your on board account
The evening before you disembark, you will receive a printed summary of your on board account, delivered to your stateroom or suite. This itemized list will show every charge you have accrued on your voyage, from drinks and service charges to spa and Shore Experiences. All charges will be made to the card you registered when you checked in, and will be paid automatically on disembarkation day, or one day later. We strongly advise that you check this list carefully and report any errors immediately so that we can assist you. If you don’t want to wait until the end of your voyage to review your spending, you can view your on board account on My Voyage at any point during your cruise – adjustments and errors can then be corrected early, and before your card is charged. Alternatively, you can request a printout from the Purser’s Desk.
Any items purchased after early morning on disembarkation day will be paid automatically in the days following your arrival back home.
Please note that, to ensure funds are available on your credit/debit cards, pre-authorisation holds are placed on your account throughout your voyage. This ensures peace of mind for you that these funds have been reserved to cover all of your on board expenses. No funds will be debited from your credit/debit card until the final payment is processed. Pre-authorisation holds will vary by your bank provider but should be released within 14 business days.
Casino and library
The night before arrival into port, guests are reminded to cash in any remaining casino credit, and return any library books. These venues will be closed once the ship arrives at the terminal, resulting in lost credit in the case of the casino, and possible charges for unreturned library books.
Packing and organising your luggage
As standard and at no extra charge, our stewards will carry your main luggage off the ship for you on disembarkation day. If you wish to use this service, you will need to have everything packed the evening before you disembark. We suggest keeping a hand luggage bag aside for a change of clothes, toiletries, and documentation for the following day. You can then leave your main luggage outside your stateroom for the stewards to collect; typically this should be done by 11pm. Every item of luggage needs to have a luggage label attached – you should have some already that you used at embarkation, but if these have become lost or damaged during your stay, simply contact reception or your steward for assistance.
If you prefer, you may choose to carry your own luggage off the ship. In this case, you can keep your bags in your stateroom the night before you disembark; they will not be collected by the crew. You will also be able to leave the ship at an earlier timeslot.
Clear your stateroom
After you’ve packed, check and double check your suite or stateroom – you’d be surprised how many people leave items behind. Be sure to check under furniture, the backs of shelves and drawers, and your safe.
If you do leave anything behind, we have a lost property service: simply fill out our contact form on our website. However, we cannot guarantee recovery of lost items.
Top tip: to ensure nothing valuable is forgotten, some guests like to keep one shoe in the safe, to ensure they remember to check it at the end of their voyage!
Check your disembarkation time
You will receive a note in your stateroom informing you of your disembarkation time, and the meeting point you need to report to before leaving the ship. Queens and Princess Grill guests have priority disembarkation, so they will get earlier times; and other grades vary depending on their stateroom location, much like the embarkation process. Your meeting point will be a ship area or venue that, by now, you’ll be familiar with. Simply take a seat and wait there until you are called to disembark.
Disembarkation documentation
You will also require any visa or vaccination documentation relevant to your disembarkation port, plus your passport and your cruise card, the latter of which you should hand over to crew members as you leave.

Disembarkation day dining and activities
The usual restaurants and buffet will be open for breakfast on disembarkation day, though the usual times may not apply. Details of timings will have been communicated to you along with your disembarkation time the previous evening. You’ll be asked to vacate your stateroom fairly early – around 8am – so we suggest taking your hand luggage with you to breakfast so that you don’t have to rush back to collect it.
No other on board activities are held on disembarkation day.
Disembarkation process
Once you have finished savoring every last bite of your final Cunard breakfast – for this voyage, at least! – you are free to make your way to your disembarkation point at your allocated time. Then, sit back and relax until you hear your deck called out on the ship announcement system. It’s at this point you can leave the ship. You’ll be asked to hand your cruise card to the staff at the door, then follow the gangway into the terminal to collect any luggage and proceed through customs.
Luggage collection and customs
Any luggage that has been collected from your suite or stateroom will be removed from the ship and left in the luggage hall for you to collect. It will be organised by deck, via numbered signs – simply go to your deck number and locate your luggage there. Trolleys will be available for you to move your luggage through customs easily.
Similar to airports, customs comes after luggage collection. Officers may be available to process any declarations you may have to make.
Travel home
Most terminals have public transport routes available, and taxis often queue along ranks ready to take people to their onward destination. If you are arriving at an unfamiliar terminal, it would be wise to familiarize yourself with the facilities and transport connections available, to get to your hotel or next part of your journey.

FAQs about disembarkation day
Can I choose my disembarkation time?
No, unfortunately we are unable to facilitate requests for specific times to disembark. Times are assigned according to stateroom/suite location and grade – suite guests get priority disembarkation, and so will get an earlier timeslot. Having said this, if you choose to carry your luggage off the ship yourself, you may leave earlier.
What do I need to prepare for disembarkation day?
The main preparations are packing, checking your disembarkation time and location, and ensuring any visas/documents are in order.
How early should I schedule my departure transportation?
You can arrange your departure transport as far in advance as you wish if you are travelling by public transport (train, bus, or plane). If you plan to travel by taxi, you can book these at the terminal.
Can I keep my luggage with me until the end of disembarkation?
Yes, you can: if you want to leave earlier, you can keep your luggage in your room and carry it off the ship yourself. Luggage will not be removed from staterooms or suites by stewards.
Are there any special arrangements for passengers with early flights?
If you have already booked flights and are concerned about timings, please call our Customer Service Department for advice. We cannot guarantee that timings will work out, so please ensure you leave plenty of time before any booked onward transportation, including flights.
What happens if I miss my disembarkation time?
You will still be able to leave the ship, but you may be required to queue with guests from the following timeslot and risk experiencing delays.
Can I leave the ship earlier than my scheduled disembarkation time?
To minimise queues and ensure everyone disembarks safely, we request that guests wait at their disembarkation point at their designated time, until called forward to disembark.
The wait is over, and your cruise is finally here. Soon you'll be unpacking in your spacious suite or stateroom, breathing in fresh sea air on deck, and sipping a cocktail while you decide where you'd like to eat for dinner. But before all that comes boarding day. Our expert guide gives you everything you need to know about each step, and some top tips to get the best out of your first day on board with Cunard.
What is embarkation day?
Embarkation day is day one of your Cunard voyage. It’s the day that you go through the cruise terminal and step on board your ship. It’s an exciting day, but there’s quite a lot to think about. Having said that, with the right preparation, the luggage, security, and documentation process will run smoothly, and you’ll enjoy a stress-free start to your cruise holiday.
Why is embarkation day important?
Embarkation day can often set the tone for the rest of your voyage, so preparation is key to ensure it’s as swift and worry-free as possible. You will receive emails from us in the lead-up to your voyage – make sure you check these regularly as they’re helpful for making sure you’re clear on what is required for embarkation (read on for more details). Also, make sure your travel arrangements to the terminal itself are all in hand – don’t forget to account for last-minute traffic and book your parking in advance if you need it.
What to expect on embarkation day
Embarkation typically begins at around midday and can last until around 4.30pm. In many ways, cruise terminals are similar to airport terminals – you have to drop off your luggage, check in, and go through security just like when travelling by air. Boarding for a cruise is often quicker and easier, however, because instead of potentially hundreds of scheduled flights, it’s likely that there will only be one or two ships departing.
Even though there are things you can do to make embarkation quicker and easier – online check-in via My Cunard being at top of the list – you should expect some queuing and waiting, especially if you have booked a Britannia grade stateroom.
Preparing for embarkation day
Checklists and essentials to pack
With itineraries all over the world, a suitcase packed for a Cunard voyage will depend largely on where you have chosen to sail (visit our full packing guide for more information). However, there are a few essentials that you might want to pack in your hand luggage to get the most out of your first day on board.
Travel documents and identification
Whether you have checked in online or not, we suggest bringing all the below with you, as you may be asked to show them at the terminal.
If you have checked in online, you’ll also need to bring:
Luggage handling and tags
Most cruise terminals operate a simple enough luggage system, but if you’ve not seen it before it can seem daunting. Don’t forget that terminal staff are always on hand to point you in the right direction if you are unsure.
Firstly, you will need to print off your luggage tags. These are available to print via My Cunard, once you have completed your online check-in. They include your name and stateroom number, and some simple instructions explaining how to fold and attach them to your luggage. You can print as many as you like - as long as your travels don’t include flights, you can take as much luggage as you wish on board (though each bag must weigh under 23kg).
Luggage is dropped off just outside the terminal doors, near to large, numbered signs. The numbers correspond to the deck your stateroom is on – this can be found on your boarding pass. Simply find the sign with your deck number on, ensure your luggage tags are firmly attached, and leave them near the sign, or hand them to a member of staff. The luggage will be loaded onto the ship and delivered straight to your suite or stateroom, as per the luggage tags. Voila!
What to wear on embarkation day
This will largely depend on your itinerary. If you’re embarking during a Barcelona summer or a Melbourne winter, for example, light, loose clothing, and a sunhat are advisable. Embarkations in cooler weather, in somewhere like Vancouver or New York, may call for additional layers. Check the local weather to see what is most appropriate. Whatever the forecast predicts, we suggest comfortable shoes in case of queues; and of course, you may find that you walk a lot on board as you explore your new home away from home.
Embarkation day travel
Traveling to the cruise terminal should be planned in advance. Terminals may be accessible by train, air, or road. If you’ll be flying in, try to book a flight that is due to arrive in plenty of time, so that you still make your sailing if there are airport delays. Likewise, if you’ll be arriving by car, ensure you leave enough time to account for traffic - and book your parking in advance. It’s worth noting that if you book the Cunard Fare, you get parking or transfers included (subject to availability), making the journey even easier.

Navigating the embarkation process
Arrival at the cruise terminal/port
Precise locations and facilities depend on which cruise terminal or port you are sailing from. Usually, there will be long-stay car parking near to the terminal and staff will be outside to direct you. Local taxis will drop you off just outside the departures entrance. Most terminals have bus routes that stop very close by. If you are taking public transport, make sure you familiarize yourself with the route you need to take from the station or bus stop to the terminal. Alternatively, taxis will likely be on hand.
Embarkation assistance
Most cruise terminals are fully accessible for mobility scooter and wheelchair users, with ramped walkways and elevators available. Some assistance is available; ensure you complete your On Board Needs questionnaire prior to sailing so that we are aware of any assistance required. Please note that we cannot offer assistance with hand luggage, so we advise this is kept to a manageable level for yourself and any traveling companions.
If we have a high number of guests requiring assistance at the terminal, you may be asked to wait in turn.
Security and check-in procedures
Checking in online via My Cunard is an easy way to minimize time spent at the terminal and is available to complete 21 days before sailing. However, if you’re unable to do this, or you’d prefer not to check in online, you can still check in at the terminal desk. Either way, ensure you have all your documentation with you on the day.
At the check-in desk, your boarding pass will be checked, if you have completed online check-in, against your passport details. Delays may occur if your My Cunard check-in information doesn’t match your passport. You may also be asked to re-take your photograph (another feature of online check-in) if the photo submitted doesn’t fit the requirements. If you haven’t checked in online you will also go through this process, your details will be taken, and your boarding pass handed to you.
Once you’re checked in, you’ll be asked to wait to be called to security. The order is decided by stateroom grade and location. This is likely to be the longest wait you experience before boarding, so ensure you have drinks and snacks with you in case of delays.
Security consists of an airport-style X-ray conveyor belt for hand luggage. You’ll be asked to remove your belt, loose change, and other metal or electronic items on your person. You may also be asked to remove your shoes. You’ll then pass through a sensor gate, and security staff may check you over as an additional precaution.
Once you’ve collected your belongings after these checks, you’re free to proceed up the gangway and board your Cunard Queen.
Boarding the ship smoothly
There will be a short walk to your ship from the cruise terminal, and lifts will be available where required. Crew will meet you at the gangway to check your boarding pass, and they’ll also take your picture to enable fast boarding on shore days during your voyage. Once this is complete, you’ll walk on into the warmly lit, shining Grand Lobby of your Cunard Queen, welcomed by smiling crew members. You have arrived, and your voyage can now begin.

Arrival on board
Welcome on board
After you step onto your Cunard Queen for the first time, enjoy that one-of-a-kind sensation. That feeling when you know you’re at the start of your vacation, with days or perhaps even weeks ahead that you can spend however you please. But, before you can find your new favourite bar at sea, explore the spacious decks, or tuck into the buffet, you need to find your suite or stateroom.
The gleaming bellhops and other crew members in the Grand Lobby will direct you to the elevators. The first digit of your stateroom number (shown on your boarding documents) tells you which deck you need. You may be greeted by more crew when you reach the correct deck, but if not don’t worry – staterooms are signposted to your left and right when you exit the elevators.
Once you find your room, you’ll see an envelope in the pigeonhole just outside. This contains a swipe key card for each person in the stateroom – use one to gain entry. Welcome to your home away from home.
Inside the suite or stateroom, you will find several useful documents: a welcome letter, a guide to My Voyage (our mobile-friendly voyage planner and booking tool), and your first Daily Program, showing all the different activities you could choose to do that evening. This program will be delivered afresh to your room each evening for the following day, and each one is full of things to do on board during your voyage. You could do as much or as little as you like – it’s entirely up to you.
Soon after you arrive, your steward will come to greet you (or, if you are a Queens Grill guest, your butler). They will introduce themselves, show you around your suite or stateroom, and invite you to ask any questions you might have. They will also give you their on board phone number, so you can call them if you require anything during your stay. Your steward will turn down your room twice a day for the duration of your voyage, and they are your first point of contact for any stateroom-related queries or problems.
You could stay to unpack with a glass of the sparkling wine left for you to enjoy, or perhaps you’d prefer to start exploring the ship straight away. Of course, if you are a Queens Grill Suite guest, your butler could unpack for you.
Safety drills and procedures
Once you’ve found your accommodations, you have a couple of safety tasks to complete before the ship sets sail. The first is to find your muster station.
Muster stations are set locations around the ship where guests need to report to in the case of an emergency. Your muster station is written on your cruise key card, which you’ll have found outside your stateroom. You should report to your muster station as soon as you can, and before the ship sets sail. Crew members will meet you there to scan your card and give you some key information.
In addition to this, a video will be playing on the television in your suite or stateroom, giving you additional information about emergency procedures, including evacuation routes and lifejacket locations. We ask that you watch this video in its entirety before your ship sets sail. You will also notice an evacuation route displayed on or near your door. Again, please make note of this and ask your steward if you have any concerns.
A safety drill may take place on embarkation day. Please listen to crew members during this drill and follow instructions as required.
Exploring the ship
Most of the ship is open on embarkation day for you to explore. Once you have found your suite or stateroom, and reported to your muster station, you are free to rest or roam as you please. Perhaps you wish to go to the top decks to breathe in the sea air and enjoy a cocktail at the poolside bar. Or maybe you wish to find a coffee and a cosy nook at Café Carinthia, or visit one of the largest libraries at sea to find your perfect vacation read? You could explore the many bars and restaurants available on board; the embarkation day buffet at the Lido (Queens Elizabeth and Victoria) or Kings Court (Queen Mary 2) is ideal for a spot of lunch after the embarkation process.
Though the ship seems large, you’re invited to relax wherever you find yourself. You have plenty of time ahead to explore and orient yourself – all entirely at your own pace. It’s your vacation, after all.
Reservations and activities on board
Many activities, such as the spa and alternative dining, can be booked ahead of your voyage on My Cunard. However, these and various other experiences can also be booked on board if you prefer. You could do this using your phone and the My Voyage app (you will find instructions on how to find and use this in your stateroom) or via the Purser’s Desk on board. Grills guests have the added personal touch of a Grills concierge, or a dedicated butler to help them with bookings too. Spa treatments, Shore Experiences, selected dining options, internet packages, drinks packages, and selected entertainment and events are all bookable. For families, children’s clubs are also available to book daily: again, use My Voyage or call the reception desk for assistance.
The buffet opens in the early afternoon, as do the pools and deck bars (in fine weather), and cafes. Mareel Wellness and Beauty may not be open for treatments, but it may be open for tours and for you to browse their extensive menu. Why not pick the perfect way to pamper yourself later on in the voyage, and perhaps even enjoy a special discount? Multiple parties and sailaway events begin in the late afternoon, and live music – which you’ll find throughout many on board venues – begins in earnest in the evening. Not to mention the restaurants. Be welcomed into a world of culinary delights night after night, all served with a generous helping of our famous White Star Service.
The on board shops and casinos are not open straight away, but will be ready to welcome you when the ship is 12 miles out to sea.

Our top tips for a stress-free embarkation day
Check in online
As mentioned above, this one is a big time-saver at the cruise terminal. Check in online via My Cunard from 21 days before your sail date to save additional queuing and paperwork at the check-in desk. Filling in your complete information will also help speed the process along on the day itself.
Priority embarkation
If you’re keen to get on board as quickly as possible, the best way to do so is to with priority embarkation. This is a separate queue in the terminal with fewer people, so you can board even more efficiently. Guests staying in our Princess or Queens Grill Suites get priority embarkation, and also get an earlier boarding time; you could get to your terminal as early as midday. This means fewer queues and more time exploring on board.
Platinum or Diamond Cunard World Club members also get priority embarkation (but not necessarily an earlier arrival time as this depends on stateroom grade). View our loyalty benefits to find out more.
Couples getting married on board with our Celebrations at Sea package also get priority embarkation.
Arriving early vs. arriving later
This one is easy: try your best to arrive at the cruise terminal on time! Your boarding pass, available on My Cunard once you check in, will give you a set arrival time. Your boarding time will depend on which stateroom grade you are (Grills guests get priority embarkation, and so will board earlier in the day), and on where in the ship your stateroom is located. This system helps the terminal staff to get everyone boarded safely and quickly and prevents a build-up of queues in the terminal and on the gangways.
If you arrive early, thinking you will get on board quicker, think again – staff are likely to ask you to wait until your allocated boarding slot. If you arrive too late you risk being denied boarding, so do what you can and plan for traffic or other eventualities.
Prepare to wait
Even if you check in online, arrive in the correct timeslot, and have all your documents ready, you may still experience some queues during the embarkation process. The best way to deal with this is to be prepared. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, bring a drink to stay hydrated, a few snacks to stave off hunger, and something to keep you occupied, like a good vacation read.
Know your stateroom number
Some bookings may have a stateroom assigned weeks before sailing, and some only just before, if you are fortunate to win a last-minute upgrade. Either way, check and re-check your boarding pass so that you become familiar with your stateroom number. The first number is your deck, and knowing this will make it much easier once on board to find your stateroom. The last number is also helpful: odd numbers are found on the starboard (right) side of your ship, whereas even numbers are on the port (left) side.
Consider alternative dining
The embarkation buffet on board with Cunard is a cut above what you would normally expect, but despite the generous size it can get busy, particularly around mid-afternoon when most guests are on board. Your stateroom restaurant (Britannia, Britannia Club, Princess or Queens Grill) will also be open from around 1pm and may provide a more comfortable option. Booking an elevated meal on your first night is also a brilliant tip – Steakhouse at the Verandah, for example, is often booked up later in the voyage, but on embarkation night has space to spare. Book it ahead of time on My Cunard or try your luck once on board.
Put your phone on airplane mode
Unless you have purchased one of our internet packages, you will be charged maritime roaming rates if you fail to switch off your data roaming on your mobile or tablet device. This can rack up an unpleasant bill by the end of your voyage, so we strongly suggest switching on airplane mode once your ship leaves port. Don’t worry – My Voyage works on the ship’s WiFi at no additional charge, so you can use this service to book and plan activities without concern.
Embarkation FAQs
What should I bring with me on embarkation day?
Apart from your main luggage, we suggest that you keep the following in your hand luggage for embarkation day:
Can I board the ship early?
No; you will be permitted on board the ship according to the arrival time stated on your boarding pass. Please ensure you check this before you depart for the terminal to reduce your waiting time.
Are there any age restrictions for embarkation?
Guests under 18 cannot check in by themselves; they must check in at the same time as the accompanying adult on their booking.
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
Yes, you can, and we recommend bringing water and snacks in case of terminal queues. You can also bring a bottle of alcohol (1 liter per guest) on board to enjoy in your stateroom, or (for a corkage fee) in one of our restaurants. We strongly recommend that glass bottles are carried in your hand luggage, as we cannot be held liable for any breakages that may occur in main luggage items.
Is there storage available for carry-on bags during embarkation?
Similar to most airports, cruise terminals do not include storage for hand luggage. Unattended items of any kind are considered a security risk and will be removed and may be destroyed. Ensure you pack suitably for your hand luggage, and that your bags are not too large or too heavy for you to handle until you reach your suite or stateroom.
Can I change dining or activity reservations on embarkation day?
Yes, you can. Any reservations made via My Cunard in the lead up to your cruise can be changed either on My Voyage or by contacting reception once on board (Grills guests can enjoy the service of their concierge to assist them). My Voyage will be available once you board, so you can make new reservations on there as well for the days ahead.
What time are staterooms ready on embarkation day?
Typically, suites and staterooms are available as early as 1pm. Grills Suites will be made available first. If your stateroom is not ready for you when you board, you can relax in one of our on board venues instead, take lunch at the buffet or main dining restaurants, or enjoy a dip in the pool while you wait – remember to pack your swimsuit in your hand luggage!
What if I miss my embarkation time?
Please make sure you check the arrival and final boarding times on your boarding pass. We will do our utmost to get you checked in on arrival, but cannot guarantee boarding if you miss the final embarkation time.
Can I keep my cruise card?
Yes, you are able to keep your cruise card after your cruise.
If you would prefer not to keep your cruise card, there will be rubbish bins available when you disembark.
I had to leave the ship early and I left my luggage on board, who do I contact?
Any luggage that has been left on board will be landed in Southampton at the end of the voyage and then transferred to the Luggage Handling Company in Southampton, where it will be safely stored in their warehouse until further notice.
To arrange delivery or collection please contact (800) 728-6273 between Monday - Friday 5am - 6pm PT (8am-9pm ET); Saturday 6am - 5pm PT (9am-8pm ET); Sunday 6am - 3:15pm PT (9am-6:15pm ET) or alternatively, you can email: info@thebaggagehandlingcompany.com.
Please note, delivery charges are the responsibility of the passenger.
How do I register my disability or medical requirements?
If you do have any disability or medical requirements, please let us know at the time of booking or as soon as the need is known via the online form on My Cunard.
We ask that you complete and return the questionnaire as soon as possible and ideally, no later than 14 days before departure; this is to ensure there is sufficient time to be able to contact you should we need to discuss any of the information that has been provided.
Our full mobility scooter policy, and other information, can be found on our on board needs webpages.
Can I take more than one mobility aid with me?
Yes, as long as you are booked into the correct accommodation for your equipment, you are welcome to bring more than one mobility aid. For further information, please see the question - 'Which cabins are suitable for mobility scooter users?'
I lost something on the ship. Do you have a lost property?
If you have left property on board please complete our email form, selecting 'Lost property' as the topic, on our Contact us page, ensuring that you complete all fields. We will contact you within four to eight weeks to advise whether or not your item has been found.
Please note that due to the volume of lost property, safety and hygienic reasons, only the following items will be returned:
Jewelry, binoculars or watches (found in stateroom)
Electrical items including tablets, e-readers, computers, laptops with/without chargers, cameras, camcorders, mobile phones, chargers found with an electrical item
Handbags (non-hold luggage), clutch bags, purses and wallets (found in stateroom with an identifiable item within)
Passports, unless contacted on the day of departing the ship, will be immediately handed to the relevant Consulate Office.
Where possible items found on board and not traceable to a guest will be landed ashore to potentially be reunited if identified by the owner. All other lost property items will be disposed of on board appropriately, after the end of the voyage.
How long does it take to return lost property?
Depending on the location of the ship and when items are landed ashore, it can take a minimum of eight weeks for our Lost Property team to receive, catalog and post found items. International postage times may vary. Please note a nominal charge will be made to cover administration and postage costs.
The collection of items in person is available only with a prearranged appointment.
What happens to unclaimed lost property?
Items will be kept for three months after being landed by our shore Lost Property team. If unclaimed, we reserve the right to dispose of or donate the items to approved charities.
